The correspondence course is now full – please contact us to add your name to the waiting list or to be informed when the next course starts

Plymouth Calligraphers are a local group who hold regular meetings where we develop our calligraphy skills, explore new techniques, share ideas, and learn from each other and our tutors. The group has a range of skill levels from beginner to the more experienced calligrapher.

This course is aimed at total beginners or at the first time calligrapher, who have very little knowledge of the art of calligraphy and would like to further explore this art form.

How does the course work

The course will consist of three main modules of study:

  • The Foundation Hand
  • Italic
  • Medieval Scripts

As you complete each lesson you send your work to a tutor who will mark it and answer your questions. You can work at your own pace but as calligraphy is a skill that benefits from regular and sustained practice, we suggest that you complete the programme of study within a year.

What will I study?

The Course is devised to answer requests from those who wished to study calligraphy seriously but were unable to attend full-time courses.

The first session will include a meeting with the tutor who will take you through the setting up process of the calligraphy board, pen/nib preparation and talk you through what is expected during the course of study.

There will be a charge of £20 per module. On completion of the program, we would like you to join Plymouth Calligraphers at the end of the course, this will then allow you to explore further the art of calligraphy and benefit from being with like minded people who enjoy this art form.
